What is modern slavery?

Modern Slavery is the exploitation of other people for personal or financial gain. This could be in the form of labour exploitation, which also includes criminal exploitation, domestic servitude and forced marriage, sexual exploitation and organ donation. Victims often suffer more than one type of exploitation. In 2019, UK authorities received 10,627 referrals of potential victims of modern slavery, the most common form being forced labour. UK nationals make up over a quarter of all referrals including children, however 94% of adult victims are trafficked from outside the UK. Migrants are particularly vulnerable to different forms of modern slavery for a range of reasons: language barriers, low awareness of labour rights, precarious immigration status, and reliance on low-skilled and irregular work.
